Hi Mark,

Thanks for you help. The problem was that I didn't really see the "Equal constraint" in inventor (as I said, I'm really fresh starting on inventor) and on you image it seemed like a "parallel constraint" which I couldn't add. When I saw the equal constraint, added the all the 3 and it went ok :-)

Once again, thank you for your help.

Hello Paulo,

Welcome to the ODP! The problem is likely in your Application Options settings. If you go to Tools > Options > Application Options > Sketch Tab. In the 2D Sketch area, change the Constraint placement priority from Parallel and perpendicular to Horizontal and vertical. I would also change the default setting below that to “Apply driven dimension”.

You likely need a parallel or perpendicular constraint somewhere. Try adding these, or use the Auto Dimension tool (to the right of the Dimension tool on the Constrain Panel). Personally, I would start over with the new default settings as you may have problems with constraints added in either fashion mentioned above.
Let me know how things work out!

Hi Mark,

I'm just starting to learn inventor and through google came across your tutorials. To start with, I'm following this tutorial and on this step I got totally lost when drawing the top left arc. I see some parallel constraints which I'm not being able to set. Also, at this stage my drawing still says '2 dimensions needed" - It probably has something to do with those constraints, but at this point I'm completely lost. This tutorial is quite a bit old, but it would be great if you could give me an hint on this one :-)

Thank you,
Paulo

Hi Dylan,

This is kind of a strange one. You must have a part to create a sketch, so there is a part somewhere. Is there any way you can email or place online a screenshot of your entire interface that contains a sketch you speak of? Windows 7 has the snipping tool for doing this under Accessories. Once you do that, we should be able to nail down the issue. I’ll likely move this to the forum so that others can see the image.

I am very new to the interface and am experiencing a rookie problem that I presume takes a long time to fix. In 2 cases, both for the iDoor and your ERP Cabinet tutorials, I have managed to nearly finish all steps without creating a single part at the start of the tutorial as you had directed. I am obviously realizing now the extent of that problem as inventor is prohibiting me from extruding solids from the carefully followed sketches created. I am very frustrated with this, as I have done most of the work but without receiving the satisfaction of making a 3D form. Although I have not found a solution online, I am hoping there is an easy fix where I can import a sketch into a new part so that I can remedy this issue. Is there such a trick?

Hi Karl,

Thanks for your reply Karl. The problem was found to be an internal problem with Inventor that is causing dimension leaders to get very, very, long when driving some iLogic constraints under some conditions. I need to update this page. Sorry, and thanks again,

Hello, I was working through this tutorial, but the link contained here...

"Now download this snippet of code (text format), open the file and copy the rule to the clipboard. Start a new iLogic rule named Text Changer, and paste the text you just copied into the Rule Editor."

appears to be broken. Could you please update the link so that I can complete this tutorial......Please! :)

Thanks, Daniel

I made the same recommendation to a former co-worker (sup Josh) from the great state of Washington yesterday. Until I can figure out what caused the freaky-deaky behavior, I really don’t want to take a chance on disaster, so redraw it is. Very busy, so it will likely take a few days.

Ok big mistake from my part... I opened my file by mistake.
I was in a hurry and only checked that it wasn't zoomed out when it opened.

You are right, when I try to load your file I get the compatibility warning.

if you switch to 2012 I think most of us would be even happier since I doubt that any of us will have the 2013 anytime soon.
I for one already advised my boss that the 2013 is not worth the upgrade. So we'll wait for cooler new features from the next version.

Thanks again

I hear you Herve. There is a ton of interest in ERP, and I would like to get moving now! If I cannot get an answer from Autodesk that solves the problem by the beginning of next week, I will likely remodel the Layout Part in Inventor 2012 –I know that there are no problems in that release.

Mark

P.S. You could open the Automated Cabinet Design.ipt file in Inventor 2012? You shouldn’t be able to.

Hi Chris,

I can't figure out where you went astray, but the error you are getting means you have an out of round part --which is very hard to do. Even a partial revolve of, say, 300° will thread just fine.

An oval seems to be what you have --how it became that way, I cannot tell without having the part in-hand. You should likely delete what you have and start over. Follow the instructions to a T, and it should work perfectly.

Hi Mark,

I did revolve the part. I'm still getting that error message. Inventor doesn't even let you pick the Thread Tool in Sketch mode. I have my fully revolved part (it looks kind of like a long silver bullet) but when I click on Thread I'm getting "Could not find cylindrical or conical faces to thread." Very odd.

Hi Chris,

Sorry for the delay. Windows 7 puked on me on Monday, and I've been as busy as a one legged man in an ass kicking contest ever since.

The first part of your question is correct, you cannot use the Thread tool until you have a solid (cylindrical) body to apply threads to. If you have a Revolved solid body as shown above, the tool should work great. Did you Revolve the part?

Hi Mark,

I can only grab the thread tool once I've clicked on "Finish Sketch" and have my revolved piece. Even then, when I'm clicking on the "Thread Tool" I'm getting an error message that says: "Could not find cylindrical or conical faces to thread."

Any idea what the issue might be?

Hi Herve,

Beyond the trust in the cloud is the perpetual dribbleware prospect. Once an online only subscription format is established, you can no longer wait for a stable version to come out –or hold off on upgrading because the cash is not there. What does one do in those cases? Do you shut the design division of the company down until times get better? Go out of business?

Hi Rodney,

I heard rumors of this back at Autodesk University 2008, and deep down I really didn’t think they would pull such a bone-headed move. I can see the little ‘apps’ being cloud based only, but Inventor, AutoCAD, or any other of the large programs that companies rely on for their livelihood ----not so much.

The shipyard I used to work for had huge problems getting information back and forth to suppliers because the town of 50,000(ish) was connected to the internet via a string and two cans ---well, not quite. There was only one can.

The point is, the worlds internet infrastructure is not anywhere near ready for implementation of pipe dreams of this proportion, and the further you get from city centers, you know –where people will actually be using the software –the worse it gets.

Most of the non entertainment-related Autodesk product users I have meet will see this, as you have, as a slap in the face by a company that seems to be abandoning its roots in Engineering and Design for the bright lights of Hollywood.

There are many other reasons as well, but I’ll have to get to those in another comment.:)

I honestly hope that they are not that stupid.
It's an expensive licence and the tool is used to create really sensitive intellectual property. there isn't a project manager or CEO in the his/her right mind that would trust that kind of data "in the Cloud"
