The image below shows the cutting of the orb on the Aztec Style Bed’s headboard. It, like the rest of this bedroom suite, was made from solid basswood. The client choose stained basswood for its lack of pronounced grain that could clash with the carvings –and the lower price of course.
Although this probably looks dangerous to some, its really not. There is no way my hands could be pulled into the blade.
Last pic showing some of the carved details on the footboard. In this one, you can see some of the bazillion lines carved into this piece. The closely spaced narrow lines require a steady hand and razor sharp tools. The majority of the straight lines on this project were carved with a knife, which became a good deal smaller from the continuous sharpenings. The large round things are two inch recessed maple buttons that add a great deal of depth and interest.
If you have not seen the other two pieces in this series, you can get to them via the links to the left under woodworking.

I absolutely love this bed….any way I can get measurements and pricing?
Hi Brittany,
Sorry, but no. I no longer build furniture except for myself. Back in the early 90's that three piece bedroom set was built for $15,000. It was a California Queen size. Last I heard, the woman I made it for had moved to New York. Sorry
