Inventor 2013 New Feature – User Preferences

The new for Inventor 2013 User Preferance featuresThis new Inventor 2013 feature is new in the same sense as buying a used car. It is new to you –but has been around the block. What they have done is removed some of the preference that used to be only available while you were installing Inventor, and placed them in various places within the program. This not only benefits you with the access to these settings at all times, but also makes for a much smoother install. I can say from my recent (two days ago) experience installing Autodesk Product Design Suite 2013, that it installed flawlessly -without a single nag screen –a vast improvement over previous versions where Inventor alone was a nightmare to install (Product Design Suite 2013 has a huge amount of included programs, and all of them installed effortlessly and attended from a flash drive).

Here is a list of the things removed from the installer, and where you can find them in Inventor 2013:

New in Inventor 2013 Application Options

User Profile The user profile options are now located way down at the bottom of the Application Options dialog (Tools Tab > Options Panel > Application Options). They are cleverly hidden under a button labeled ‘Import’. While it’s true that one of the options below the Import Button is Import itself, shouldn’t this button be labeled User Profile? Just sayin…

Inventor 2013 has the User Profile hidden at the bottom of the Application Options under the Import Button.

Measurement Units/Drawing Standard Default Settings – Although you can access this via the Welcome Screen, most people will shut that off pretty quickly. After that, you can get to this setting on the same Application Options dialog shown above, but on the File Tab where you will find a big fat button called Configure Default Template…

In Inventor 2013, there is a large button titled Configure Default Template in the Application Options

Inventor 2013 now features a seperate "Configure Default Template" dialog.

Clicking said fat button will cause the Configure Default Template dialog to appear. No rocket science here folks. Your default settings are just a couple clicks away at any time.

Part Modification – The last of the moved settings are the part modification settings. They now find their home on the Drawing tab of —–you guessed it, the Application Options dialog. This one is just a lonely little line of text with a checkbox…

In Inventor 2013, you are able to set the preferance for Enable part modification from within drawings from the Application Options

Back in the day, the CAD Administrator set these during installation according to company standards –but there are likely more seats of Inventor 2013 in little companies that do not have a manager of that flavor, and got a tad upset at having to reinstall the program to change a setting. A good change all-around.
