Autodesk Inventor vs………..a Crayon

The crayon in question is Crayon Physics Deluxe, —– a cool little program written back in 07 by Petri Purho, that uses artificial physics and virtual crayons to complete levels of an interesting  little game.

I downloaded the original version of the game (pre deluxe) for my four year old daughter back-in-the-day thinking it would be a fun learning tool….but it didn’t take.  I guess four year olds are less interested in physics than I thought……..even if it did involve crayons. Whodathunk?

Maybe it had something to do with the old-school Pink Floydesque soundtrack. One can never be sure….

.

At any rate, at the time, I wondered why, if a young dude like Petri can write a slick little program such as this in five days, the Inventor team (and the Inventor wannabe teams as well)  hadn’t at least added some basic gravity functionality to the program——-even if it were just in a Labs project to gauge interest.

My particular interest, for example, was the need for a little help in the design of a Morris Rocker I was designing. I was interested to know what the ramifications would be if I shifted the seat back a bit, or shortened the extents of the runners in the back, or changed the curve of the runners……… you know, that rapid initial design kind of stuff.  Inventor does of course have kinematic simulation which works quite well. …but it won’t give an idea of balance like gravity does.

Someday all design programs will likely include more advanced physics, but after seeing the video above —–about a program that took just days to create, it makes, me wonder if any of the big guys are playing around with something like this, and if not, why?

I’ll be posting some stuff on designing a plumbing system  in standard Inventor (no routed systems) tomorrow. I am by no means a Plumber, so maybe someone out there will spot some flaws that I can fix. Till then…
