Since my post on this error last week, a fix has been made for the extremely annoying MakeNurbsDataSurface Error. It turns out that there are so few people getting the error, that it was hard to track down, but at last, the problem is solved
It appears as though the problem started nearly two years ago after cross grading to 3Ds Max Design, and that the problem is actually the way 3Ds Max Design installs, and not with Inventor. In order to get the error, there needs to be three factors present:
- You need to have Inventor 2009 or 2010 installed
- You need to have one of the versions of 3Ds Max installed
- You need to be participating in CIP (Customer Involvement Program)
If all of those factors are present, you get the error. Here is the fix:
Start up 3Ds Max. Watch for the splash screen. Make sure you have SP1 installed as indicated in the image below…

Shut 3Ds Max back down, as well as Inventor if it is open. If you do not have the service pack installed, you will need to install the Service Pack first, then the Hot Fix. If it is installed, then just apply the Hot Fix. Here they are:
Autodesk 3ds Max 9 Service Pack 1
You should now be good-to-go!
